I love photography for so many reasons, but most of all because it captures the little things. Those little things that you think nothing of now, but years down the road will mean everything to you. Those chubby little fingers, her favorite jammies, how she likes to eat her vitamin right after dinner. These are the things I am going to want to remember.
Last year we were in the midst of so many big life changes. We were getting ready to make an international move, and leaving our first house, the house we brought Avery home to. We were both changing jobs. Our wonderful nanny who had cared for Avery since I went back to work was leaving for the Peace Corps. And Avery was at such a fun stage – 9 months old and so happy!
I don’t even remember how I found out about the Week In The Life photo project, but I loved the idea – It would be the perfect way for me to paint a picture of exactly what our lives looked like at that point in time, before everything changed. So I carried my camera around with me all.the.time. for the next 7 days, documenting the little things and the big things. As I was going through all of the pictures at the end of the week, I loved how completely I was able to tell the story of our lives through images. I put all of the photos together to make a photobook, but by that time we were completely wrapped up in the move, and getting it printed wasn’t at the top of my priority list. It wasn’t until about 6 months later, when we were settled into our new life in Honduras that I got around to getting our photobook printed from Blurb. Words cannot describe how happy I was with our little book.
And I was not the only one who was obsessed with our Week in the Life book. Avery loved it. She still looks at the book at least a few times a week. When I saw how much joy it brought her to look through it, I ordered another copy. This way she can look at it as much as she wants without me worrying about crumpled and torn pages. I think this is something I will be doing with all of our photo albums from now on, because I want her to be able to enjoy them, too.
The Week in the Life project will be from July 25 – July 31st this year. (you don’t have to do it at the designated time, but it helps to have a little motivation on days 5, 6 and 7 when you are running out of steam!) Each night next week I will post a few of the images I have captured throughout that day. If anyone else is interested in doing their own Week in the Life project, you can find all of the information here. Do it, you won’t regret it! And if anyone is looking to make a photobook, for this or anything else, I highly reccomend Blurb. Great quality, great prices, and even better customer service.
